Big Blog II: One Last Music Culture

Image
For the last Big Blog, "One Last Music-Culture," I have decided to research the music culture of Hawaii. I chose Hawaii because people see so many things that make Hawaii what it is known for today. There are different kinds of music that Hawaii has too.      Hawaiian music does not have any documentation of its historical music prior to the late 18th century. Their music came from different cultures. The music came from  numerous styles of European music, comprising the hymns (himeni) introduced by Protestant missionary choirs. Spanish-speaking Mexican cowboys(paniolos), were in particular influential immigrants in the area of music, bringing in string instruments such as an example the guitar and possibly additionally the technique of falsetto singing, whereas Portuguese immigrants carried the ukulele-like braguinha. Also, immigrants from around the world carried their own instruments beside them to the islands. This picture above is an example of the...

Music and Family Blog

For my “Music and Family” Blog, I chose both of my parents to ask questions about their musical past; whether it was just the music they listened to or if they have had any musical experience growing up. For some context, my mom was born in Ohio but moved to South Carolina when she was a kid, and my Dad was born and raised here in South Carolina.  Question 1: What type of music are you most into right now?  My Dad answered that he was more into upbeat Christian music, which is also his favorite because he likes the songs' messages when listening to them.   My mom answered that she was more into music from musicals right now. When I asked her why, she replied that there is such a variety of them, and each song can take you to a different place because of the Disney movies my sisters have been watching.  Question 2: How has your music taste changed over the years? My Dad started listening to more country as a preteen/teenager but switched to more Rock in th...

Big Blog #1: Rock and Roll

Image
For my Big Blog #1, I will be choosing to research the music genre of Rock and Roll. No this is not the kind of rock and roll like heavy metal or 1990s but the kind from the 1950s. The term Rock and Roll was not fully developed until the 1950s.  The sound of early Rock and Roll is called "rockabilly" and is a mixture of country, swing jazz, rhythm, and blues. But even then, the genre did not just appear out of nowhere. The genre of Rock and Roll derives from many other genres of music. The main genre it derives from is Rhythm and Blues, which evolved from The Blues, the beat-heavy jump blues, boogie-woogie, up-tempo jazz, and swing music. But even with all of these genres that had more influence, there was also gospel, country and western, and traditional folk music that had influences too. Today, Rock and Roll has gone and created more subgenres like classic rock, indie rock, glam rock, alternative rock, punk rock, synth-pop, post-rock, progressive rock, ska, rap-rock, funk ...

Music and Gender

There are lots of genres of music that people will listen to. For example, people listen to country, pop, classical, jazz, rock, and many more. One genre that is very popular today, especially younger people in general (16-24 years old), is Rap or Hip-Hop.  According to a study in 2021, Rap/Hip Hop was the 6th most popular music genre. In that same year, 2021, over ninety-million (93.3) people listened to Hip Hop which translated to about 27.7%.  In 2021, Out of the entire Rap/Hip Hop industry, only 2.8% of producers were female. On the lines of songs that were produced, 95% of the rap/hip hop singers were male. When the top 20 rappers in 2021 based on billboard charts came out, only 2 of the 20 rappers were female, and Drake was on top followed by Pop Smoke and Lil Baby. A podcast was released in 2019 where they talked about the top fifty rappers of all time. Out of those fifty artists, none of them were female artists.  The one thing about hip hop and rap is that since ...

Music and Rituals

Over the years of my life, I have been to different kinds of events like funerals, weddings, graduations, and many others. One thing about all of these events is they had different kinds of music. The graduations had more upbeat and happy music as a day of celebration, each funeral I've been to has had music that was more sad and slow beat, and the weddings have had a mix of both slow and upbeat music depending on the point it was at in the ceremony.      My freshman year of high school, I played in the school's orchestra where I played the cello. That year, they took the band and orchestra to graduation and from there, we played different songs as the ceremony continued. I knew that one of the songs would be long only because we had to wait on all of the seniors to walk to their seats, so we had to repeat the same few lines at least 4 times which started to make my arm sore after a while. One thing about the music that we played was it was all upbeat and fu...

Music and Me

Hello everyone, my name is Zackery Carver. I was born and raised in Anderson, SC, where I attended T.L. Hanna High School. I am an older brother of two little sisters and I have one older sister. I played cello from when I was in 5th grade all the way until my 11th grade year in high school. I have played sports for basically all my life. I bowled competitively for 6-7 years when I was younger, and this was because of my parents and what good things bowling had done for them. I played baseball from 1st grade through 9th grade and it was the sport I could never get tired of. I wrestled from 7th through 9th grade. But after playing and doing all kinds of sports with different skillsets, I chose to run over the rest of them.  I have been into running since elementary school. I participated in running club and from there joined the high school cross country and track team in 7th grade and continued with running throughout high school and now into college.  1. Current...
